Emily the elephant was excited and scared. 'A mix of feelings!' her mom declared. With her big blue backpack, she was all prepared, for her very first day at school.
Her heart went thump, her feet went stomp. 'Let's go!' said Mom with a cheery romp. The school was big, the doors were wide, and Emily felt funny inside.
She met Miss Whiskers, the fluffy cat. 'Hello, Emily!' What a chit-chat! With whiskers twitching, 'Don’t feel flat, in this great new world of school!'
Books and crayons, with a clatter and clink. So many colors! What did she think? 'I think,' said Emily, 'That school’s a dream, with colors flowing in a vivid stream.'
At recess, she met Harry the hare, hopping around without a care. 'Follow me!' he said with flair. To the playground full of fun!
They played on swings and slides that shine. 'Weee!' said Emily, 'Oh, this is fine!' With every push and climb in line, she forgot her worries, one at a time.
In class, they sang the alphabet song. 'A, B, C, won't take long!' With every letter, she felt strong, like she already belonged.
Crunch! went lunch. She had a feast. Sandwiches and fruits, even a piece. A lion shared his juice, named Maurice, and instantly, they became fast friends.
The final bell gave a ring-a-ling. The school day ended with a happy zing! Emily waved, feeling like a king of her new, big school world.
Mom asked, 'How was your day, dear?' Emily smiled, ear to ear. 'Full of fun and not a tear! Can’t wait to go back tomorrow!'
In bed, she dreamed of letters and rhyme. New friends and stories, all sublime. 'I love school!' she said, just in time, for a wish upon a star to chime.
So if you’re scared on that first day, think of Emily and her play. School’s a place for joy, hooray! Let's pack our bags without delay!
