Once upon a time, there were three billy goats named Gruff. They lived on a beautiful green hill near a river. However, the only way to reach the luscious green grass on the other side of the river was by crossing a bridge guarded by a mean and hungry troll. The smallest billy goat decided to cross the bridge first.
As the smallest billy goat Gruff stepped onto the bridge, the troll appeared. The troll had sharp teeth and big claws. He roared, 'Who's crossing my bridge?' The little goat, trembling with fear, said, 'Please let me cross. I am small and have very little meat. Wait for my brother, he is much bigger and will make a better meal.' The troll agreed and allowed the smallest goat to pass.
Next, the medium-sized billy goat Gruff approached the bridge. The troll jumped out, showing his sharp teeth. The goat, trying to sound confident, said, 'Please let me cross. I am medium-sized, but my brother will be coming soon, and he is much bigger. You will have a filling meal if you wait.' The troll reluctantly agreed and let the medium-sized goat pass.
Finally, the biggest billy goat Gruff reached the bridge. The troll crawled out, grinning wickedly. The big goat, not afraid at all, said, 'You shall not pass! I am big and strong. If you want to eat me, you must fight for it!' The troll was scared of the big goat's horns and jumped back into the river. The biggest billy goat Gruff crossed the bridge triumphantly.
From that day forward, the three billy goats Gruff could cross the bridge without being stopped by the troll. They enjoyed the delicious grass on the other side of the river whenever they pleased.
