Once upon a time, on the edge of a lively, leafy forest, there was a gentle lumberjack named Leo. Leo loved the trees, the chirping birds, and the bubbling brook.
One bright morning, while Leo was chopping wood, his shiny axe slipped from his hands and splashed into the sparkling stream!
Leo sat by the stream, tears trickling down his cheeks, as he pined for his precious axe and sang a sad song in rhythm with the rushing river.
‘Chop, chop, chip, chop,’ Leo sang. ‘How can I work without my axe? Plop, plop, drip, drop, the stream took it and won’t give it back!’
Suddenly, with a splash and a flash, a shimmering fish with a golden tail jumped out of the water.
‘Why so blue, dear friend?’ asked the fish. ‘What seems to be the matter?’
‘I lost my precious axe in the stream. Without it, I can’t work or sing my happy songs,’ sobbed Leo.
The fish swam in circles, thinking quickly. ‘I will fetch your axe for you, but you must promise to plant a seed for every tree you cut down.’
Leo brightened up immediately. ‘Of course! I love trees and the forest. I promise to plant seeds and grow more trees forever!’
With a flip and a flick, the fish dived deep and reappeared with the shiny axe balanced on its golden nose.
‘Here’s your axe,’ said the fish with a wink. ‘And remember your promise!’
From that day on, Leo became known as the Happy Hazard-Helper. He chopped and sang, but always planted more than he took, making the forest greener and lovelier!
