Once upon a time in a small village, there lived a shepherd named Numo. He had a big heart but did not know numbers.
Instead of counting, Numo used a glass jar and a paper ball for each sheep he led to the pasture.
Every morning, he would say to his sheep, 'Out you go!' and put a ball in the jar.
One by one, the sheep would leave the pen, and with each one, another ball would join the others in the jar.
In the evening, as each sheep returned, Numo removed one paper ball for each sheep that came back.
This way, with his jar and paper balls, Numo was sure all his sheep were safe.
One morning, Numo awoke to find the pen gate open and all his sheep were gone. The jar was full, but the pen was empty.
Numo felt his heart sink. He didn't know where to start looking without knowing the number of lost sheep.
Taking the full jar, Numo set out into the wide fields, calling for his beloved sheep.
As the sun climbed high, Numo met other shepherds. They saw his jar and asked about his troubles.
Numo explained his problem, and the shepherds decided to help him find his flock using their counting skills.
Together, they searched until dusk when they finally found all the sheep safe. Numo's jar was empty, but his heart was full.
